Digging Deeper - Sarah (Hewlett) Atlas

After the big news of discovering the former slaveowner of the father of Sarah (Hewlett) Atlas this week, the genealogy research team began efforts to see if any additional info could be found.

During the 2010 research trip, the team obtained a copy of Henry Hewlett's death certificate from the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge, LA.  Henry Hewlett is the brother of Sarah (Hewlett) Atlas.  Listed on his death certificate is the following information:

Name and Statistical Particulars:  Henry Hewlett, male, colored, married
Date of Birth:  June 8, 1842 in Jackson, LA
Age at Death:  74 years, 2 months, 28 days
Occupation:  (Hard to read) Appears to be Field laborer
Name and birthplace of Father:  Robert Hewlett, born in Virginia
Name and birthpalce of Mother:  MN Johnson, born in Mississippi
Date of Death:  September 5, 1916 in Saint Francisville, LA
Cause of Death:  Senility, Arteriosclerosis

Breaking down the death certificate:
- Rosalie Ogden was Henry and Sarah's sister.  She was the widow of Reuben Ogden by January 12, 1909.
- Jackson, LA is in East Feliciana Parish while Saint Francisville is in West Feliciana Parish
- Robert Hewlett's birthplace of Virginia is also noted on his 1870 US census record
- The discovery of the name MN Johnson, born in Mississippi, is key.  No other name for the mother of Robert's children has been listed anywhere.  Confirmation as to whether or not she or their children received their freedom before the end of the Civil War is still being researched.

NOTES:  The house that Henry is living in is most likely the home that his father owned.  Since Robert Hewlett cannot be located on the 1900 census, one can surmise that he probably died between 1880 and 1900.  Robert's subcommittee testimony, he mentions the land that he owns, but does not mention where it resides.  Since there were no house numbers available to the 1900 census enumerator, here is what current day Ferdinand Street looks like in Saint Francisville, LA:
