Recently, Johnson Publishing partnered with Google Books to put a lot of their archives of Jet and Ebony Magazines online. This has become a goldmine for obtaining copies of lost articles on Atlas family members who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement. For specific articles, please see the following links:
Jet Magazine - February 9, 1961 - Rev. Francis Joseph Atlas, Sr. and federal intervention during his voting rights case
Jet Magazine - June 1961 - Shriley Thompson pictured with other Freedom Riders en route to Jackson, MS
Jet Magazine - June 15, 1961 - Jean Thompson Slapped at Hinds County, MS penal farm
Jet Magazine - November 30, 1961 - Alice Thompson Held in Poplarville, MS Jail
Jet Magazine - December 14, 1961 - Alice Thompson and other Freedom Riders attacked in McComb, MS
Jet Magazine - November 29, 1962 - Shirley Thompson dancing with James Farmer of CORE
Jet Magazine - April 15, 1965 - Rev. Francis Joseph Atlas, Sr. facing reprisals after testimony in front of the Civil Rights Commission
Aside from the fact that it is great that we have another outlet to gather information on our family members, these archived magazines also are great in that they provide us a glimpse back in time to how things were. I encourage anyone to browse through them at their leisure.
The Civil Rights Archive section of the AtlasFamily.Org website will be updated soon with these new articles.
