Resources We Use to Conduct Research

  • County and State Public Records On Site and Online (Some Require Subscription Fees)
On site records are essential for anyone conducting research.  There is absolutely no way to retrieve everything online.  In addition, there is something to be said about touching the pages that your ancestors signed to enact a transaction, marriage, etc.

A large number of counties across the United States are accessible online and provide deed/conveyance indexes and records as well as marriage license information.  This is a great way to track down living people.  Search for Clerk, Clerk Recorder, County Court, Superior Court, etc. records for a particular county or state.  Examples:  State of Minnesota Court Records, Cook County, IL Clerk of the Circuit Clerk, Shelby County, TN Registrar of Deeds (Includes statewide records for Tennessee)
  • Ancestry.Com (Subscription required)
Great all around genealogy research site for multiple locations in the United States. Outside of the census and vital records information, the local newspaper collection for the United States.  Lots of hidden gems here especially for items after the 1930 US Census.
  • FamilySearch (Some portions of the site require a subscription and/or account at Fold3.Com)
By far, the best free site currently available to researchers. A number of vital records and census records are posted at this site.
  • GenealogyBank.Com (Subscription required)
Wonderful for trying to find obituaries in most major newspaper markets in the United States.  This site also contains a number of historical newspapers.
  • Family History Center/Family History Library
By far, the best library made available to the public, all over the world.  Locate the nearest Family History Center to your home and use the Library Catalog to find microfilm for your family.  Or, take a trip to Salt Lake City and have over 2 million rolls of microfilm and thousands of books at your disposal.
  • Google Books
Another great tool to use for online research.  Books that are no longer under copyright, and also do not have indexes, are fully searchable and made available here.  For examples of the types of things that we've found, please see this post and this post.
  • Google Search
When using quotation marks around a search term, or the + or the - sign, a number of interesting things can be found.   For more on search syntax, view this link.
  • Google News Archive
This search has been useful when trying to locate the archives of newspapers that have been indexed (using OCR technology) by Google.  A number of sites require a fee to actually view the articles.
